Ian P. Hennessey coordinated the second annual Knoxville Barristers Canned Food Drive Competition in which law firms competed to bring in the most canned goods for Second Harvest of East Tennessee. The drive brought in a total of 2,503.23 lbs. of food and raised $6,175.50 in donations for Second Harvest. 

Three London & Amburn shareholders were recently included as Knoxville’s “Top Attorneys 2009.”  The Top Attorneys are chosen based upon votes of members of the Knox Bar Association.  Jason H. Long was one the nine “Medical Malpractice Top Attorneys." Heidi A. Barcus and W. Dale Amburn and were two of six “Hospital and Health Care Law Top Attorneys.”

London & Amburn, P.C. was proud to participate as co-sponsors of this year’s Annual Pro Bono Awards Celebration hosted by Legal Aid of East Tennessee and the Knoxville Bar Association.  Whitney S. Bailey and Jason H. Long, members of the firm, each received an award in recognition of their service.

Whitney S. Bailey was recently appointed as the Eastern Section Chair of the “Wills for Heroes” Program by the Tennessee Bar Association Young Lawyers Division.  In that position, she will be in charge of coordinating events throughout East Tennessee to prepare free basic estate planning documents to first responders. 

Hillary B. Jones and Jason H. Long were recently inducted into the Tennessee Bar Association Fellows in recognition for their service to the Tennessee Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division. 

Diana L. Gustin and Connie S. Ditto were speakers at the East Tennessee Chapter of the American Association of Professional Coders annual meeting.  Ms. Gustin and Ms. Ditto spoke about the recent and upcoming changes to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (“HIPAA”) enacted by the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (“ARRA”).  They also discussed the effect of the Federal Trade Commission’s “Red Flag Rules” on medical practices.  The changes to HIPAA largely center on implementing electronic health records, but also provide for a private right of action on behalf of aggrieved patients, increase the responsibilities of Business Associates, and increase money penalties and fines for noncompliance.  The Red Flag Rules require creditors who maintain covered accounts to develop and implement Identity Theft Prevention Programs by August 1, 2009. 

Jason Lambert has been named a 2009 BTI Client Service All-Star.  Attorneys are named Client Service All-Stars after individual interviews with more than 270 General Counsel at Fortune 1000 organizations and professional service firms.  The 2009 BTI Client Service All-Stars are comprised of 176 attorneys from nine countries.  Mr. Lambert is the only attorney from the state of Tennessee named a 2009 Client Service All-Star.

Jason H. Long is the recipient of the Tennessee Bar Association's President's Award for his participation in the Access to Justice Initiative.  Mr. Long was presented with the Award at the Mid-winter meeting of the Tennessee Bar Association.  Read more about the Access to Justice Initiative here.

Jason H. Long, Immediate Past-President of the Young Lawyer's Division of the Tennessee Bar Association, received the Young Lawyer's Division Star of the Quarter Award for his dedication and service as the Coordinator for the Young Lawyer's Division activities as part of the TBA 4/4 Volunteer Service Day Activities. 

Jason H. Long is the Coordinator for the 4/4 Volunteer Service Day Events.  The 4/4 Service Day Events are part of the Tennessee Bar Association's Access to Justice Initiative Public Service Events on April 4, 2009.  The 4/4 Volunteer Events are the result of collaboration between Mr. Long and current TBA President Buck Lewis' efforts to encourage pro bono service among attorneys in Tennessee.  The TBA's Access to Justice Initiative includes various legislative efforts to promote pro bono efforts and culminates in the 4/4 Volunteer Service Day Events.  In an effort to provide "justice for all," the 4/4 Volunteer Service Day Events include attorneys from across the state participating in various forms of legal clinics, including Wills for Heroes, the Advanced Directives Pro Bon Initiative, Legal Lines, and the Meet the Need Challenge, which strives to ensure that legal aid clinics across Tennessee have representation in 100% of their current caseload through paid and volunteer attorneys.  For more information about the 4/4 Volunteer Service Day Events, click here or e-mail jlong@latlaw.com.

Summer H. Stevens is serving as a coach for the University of Tennessee's American Association for Justice National Trial Teams.  The University of Tennessee has two trial teams, consisting of law students in their second and third years of law school.  The teams will compete at the regional competition on February 27, 2009 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  Nick Cook, who is a law clerk with London & Amburn, is a member of the third year team.  We wish both teams the best of luck!  For more information concerning the competition, please visit the American Association for Justice website.

James H. London will be a featured speaker at the Knoxville Bar Associations’ ADR Section CLE: Mediating Medical Cases on Monday, June 1, 2009.

Jason H. Long will be a featured speaker at the Knoxville Bar Association Law Practice Today Expo at the University of Tennessee Conference Center on Friday, April 3, 2009.  Mr. Long will be one of three speakers discussing suggestions on how to grow and enhance a law practice – and retain and increase client satisfaction – all while expanding your contacts and improving your skills.  The hour long discussion is offered as a portion of Track #4 – Make It Rain of the continuing legal education program sponsored by the Knoxville Bar Association. 

Jason H. Long will be one of two featured speakers at the Knoxville Bar Association’s Lunch & Learn Continuing Legal Education program on Thursday, May 14, 2009, titled Medical Malpractice Update: Plaintiffs and Defense Perspective.  Mr. Long will represent the Defense Bar and Ms. Donna R. Davis of Butler, Vines & Babb will represent the Plaintiffs Bar. 

Jason H. Long was recognized by the University of Tennessee Professional MBA Program as one of Knoxville's rising stars in the Greater Knoxville Business Journal's "40 under 40." [Story]

Heidi A. Barcus was elected to the Board of Governors of the Knoxville Bar Association. [Story]

London & Amburn recently added three associate attorneys to the firm. Jamie Ballinger-Holden and Connie S. Ditto joined the firm in November 2008 following their admission to the bar. Both Ms. Ballinger-Holden and Ms. Ditto previously worked with the firm as law clerks. Whitney S. Bailey joined the firm in December 2008. Prior to joining the firm, Ms. Bailey practiced law in Johnson City, Tennessee. All three attorneys focus their practice on medical malpractice defense and health law.
